Flynn reached down to the comms console and switched on the voice recorder. The fog he was in was lifting and he knew what he had to do. There was still this feeling that he was somehow in an out-of-body state and something else was manipulating his actions. But there was a sudden clarity to what he had to do next, regardless of whether it was by his own free will or not.
“Captain Stovall,” he said into the recorder. “Doctor Lorien. Well, as if you really needed me to say that. I am leaving your ship. The thousand questions you might have I can only answer with one statement. The mission was meant to bring me here. I was unaware of that fact until this very moment as I am saying this to you. Wait until you hear from… well, I don’t know from exactly who… but wait. Instructions will follow and then you can go home.” He paused as his heart ached immediately with the suffocation of a love lost. He continued, “Please tell my wife I never stopped thinking of her. I love her.” Flynn held back tears. “Goodbye, Captain.”
He shut off the recorder and activated the alert light that would tell Harvey there was a message in the comms buffer. Then he took in a deep breath and said to no one in particular, “I am ready.”
